Keeping your mind off the news is more challenging now than ever. It’s easy to get swept up in the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s so important not to let it consume you. For a lot of people, creative projects can be a fulfilling distraction!
I’ve taken to scrounging around the house for any materials I can find and turn into an activity. Old Ikea curtains have become a Victorian inspired summer dress. A wool scarf brought back on vacation years ago, has become a throw pillow. With gatherings and social obligations no longer keeping you busy, now is a good time to explore the creativity you wouldn’t usually make time for!
I thought I would put together a list of my favourite DIY and upcycle projects for anyone who wants to fill their time, find a distraction or just tap into their creative side.
- I thought I’d start off the list with DIY face masks, as they are particularly relevant at this time. The article I’ve linked has two methods, sew and no-sew, as well as CDC approved guidelines you need to know before beginning. Click here for the article. Image from CDC.
- Another simple sewing project, making your own scrunchie is really easy. Plus, they’re super trendy right now! All you need is scrap fabric, elastic, and a sewing machine. This article will take you step by step through the process.
- Coffee filter butterflies are an awesome craft to do with kids, using things you already have in the house. You’ll need coffee filters, washable markers, pipe cleaners and water. Take a look here. Image by Mas & Pas.
- This is a fun one for the whole family! Get everyone together and make framed silhouette art. The art feels personal to your family, plus it looks very chic. Find the diy here.
- For those who are looking for a bit more of a sewing challenge, take a cue from designer Daniel Fletcher who recently won the first season of Next in Fashion (great Netflix binge!). To help others struggling with social isolation he put up a how-to on making a scrap fabric blanket. The results are stunning! Take a look at this article for more info. Image by Abbi Fletcher.
There is nothing more important right now than staying inside and staying safe; why not take that time to try something new? We hope you’re all doing well and keeping spirits high. Feel free to let us know about some of your favourite projects and DIYs!
Well done Elizabeth!
